Description

Amish Cinnamon Bread is a delicious, easy recipe that features a warm and fluffy texture with a sweet cinnamon swirl.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk and granulated sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until bubbly and foamy.
  2. Add the vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and egg to the yeast mixture. Mix well.
  3. Gradually add the flour and salt to the wet ingredients, stirring until a dough begins to form.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  6. Once risen, punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it out into a rectangle (about 15×10 inches).
  7. In a small bowl, combine the ground cinnamon and brown sugar. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the rolled-out dough.
  8. Starting from one of the shorter sides, roll the dough tightly to create a log. Pinch seams to seal.
  9. Cut the log in half lengthwise, exposing the cinnamon swirl, and carefully twist the two strands together into a braid.
  10. Place the braided dough into a greased loaf pan, cover with a cloth, and let rise for an additional 30-45 minutes.
  11. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  12. Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For best results, ensure the milk is at the right temperature to activate the yeast.
