Description

Char Siu Chicken is a deliciously marinated and grilled chicken dish with a perfect blend of flavors from hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, and spices.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine or dry sherry
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Sliced green onions, for garnish
  • Toasted sesame seeds, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, Chinese rice wine (or dry sherry), sesame oil, minced garlic, five-spice powder, and ground ginger. Stir to combine until the marinade is smooth.
  2. Season the chicken breasts or thighs with salt and pepper, then place them in a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish.
  3. Pour the marinade over the chicken and make sure it’s evenly coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight, for the best flavor.
  4. Preheat your grill or stovetop grill pan over medium-high heat. If cooking on the stove, you can also pan-sear the chicken in a lightly oiled skillet.
  5. Remove the chicken from the marinade (discard any excess marinade) and cook the chicken for about 6-8 minutes per side, or until fully cooked through and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C).
  6. Once cooked, let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
  7. Garnish with sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds before serving.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, marinate the chicken overnight.
  • You can substitute chicken thighs for chicken breasts based on preference.
  • Ensure the grill is preheated to achieve a nice sear on the chicken.
