Description
Char Siu Chicken is a deliciously marinated and grilled chicken dish with a perfect blend of flavors from hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, and spices.

- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
- 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine or dry sherry
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Sliced green onions, for garnish
- Toasted sesame seeds, for garnish
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, Chinese rice wine (or dry sherry), sesame oil, minced garlic, five-spice powder, and ground ginger. Stir to combine until the marinade is smooth.
- Season the chicken breasts or thighs with salt and pepper, then place them in a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish.
- Pour the marinade over the chicken and make sure it’s evenly coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight, for the best flavor.
- Preheat your grill or stovetop grill pan over medium-high heat. If cooking on the stove, you can also pan-sear the chicken in a lightly oiled skillet.
- Remove the chicken from the marinade (discard any excess marinade) and cook the chicken for about 6-8 minutes per side, or until fully cooked through and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C).
- Once cooked, let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
- Garnish with sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds before serving.
Notes
- For the best flavor, marinate the chicken overnight.
- You can substitute chicken thighs for chicken breasts based on preference.
- Ensure the grill is preheated to achieve a nice sear on the chicken.
