A creamy and cheesy scalloped potato dish that’s easy to make and perfect for any occasion.

- 4 large Russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft, about 4 minutes.
- Stir in the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
- Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly to form a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream until the mixture is smooth.
- Add salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using). Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheese until melted.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
- Repeat with remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup cheese on top.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley, if desired.
Notes
- Make sure to slice the potatoes evenly for consistent cooking.
- This dish can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator before baking.
- Feel free to experiment with different types of cheese for added flavor.
