Description

Homemade Apple Bars Flaky are a delightful treat, featuring a crisp crust and a sweet apple filling, perfect for dessert or a snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (for crust)
  • 1 cup softened shortening (for crust)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (for crust)
  • 1 egg yolk (for crust)
  • 1/2 cup milk (for crust)
  • 7 sliced apples (for filling)
  • 1 1/4 cups white sugar (for filling)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for filling)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (for filling)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for filling)
  • 2 teaspoons tapioca (for filling)
  • 1 egg white (for topping)
  • white sugar (for sprinkling on top)

Instructions

  1. Blend flour, shortening, and salt together in a bowl. Set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix egg yolk and milk thoroughly.
  3. Add the egg yolk and milk mixture to the flour mixture. Mix until a uniform dough forms.
  4. Divide the dough in half. Roll out one half on a floured surface to fit an 11″x17″ greased cookie sheet. Set aside.
  5. In a bowl, mix sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, salt, and all-purpose flour until combined. Pour the mixture over the prepared bottom crust.
  6. Evenly sprinkle tapioca over the apple filling.
  7. Roll out the remaining dough to match the size of the cookie sheet. Place it over the apple filling.
  8. Whip the egg white and brush it over the top crust. Sprinkle white sugar evenly over the top.
  9. Preheat the oven to 350ºF (175ºC). Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
