Description

Delicious homemade Krispy Kremes that are soft, fluffy, and glazed to perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 (¼-ounce) packages instant yeast (or 4½ teaspoons)
  • ⅓ cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 1½ cups milk (whole or low fat)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • ⅓ cup butter (or shortening), softened
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • Canola oil, for frying
  • ½ cup butter, melted (for glaze)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (for glaze)
  • 57 tablespoons evaporated milk (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in the warm water in a small bowl and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine yeast mixture, milk, sugar, salt, eggs, and softened butter. Mix until well incorporated.
  3. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, mixing until the dough is soft and slightly sticky.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1½ hours until doubled in size.
  6. Roll out the risen dough to ½-inch thickness on a floured surface. Cut doughnut shapes using a doughnut cutter or two round cutters.
  7. Place cut doughnuts on a baking sheet, cover, and let rise for 30-45 minutes until puffy.
  8. Heat 2 inches of canola oil in a large pot or skillet to 350°F.
  9. Fry doughnuts in batches, cooking each side for 1-2 minutes until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  10. For the glaze, whisk melted butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and evaporated milk until smooth.
  11. Dip warm doughnuts into the glaze to coat fully and let set before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure the water is at the right temperature for the yeast to activate.
  • Do not overcrowd the pot when frying to maintain the oil temperature.
  • Store any leftover doughnuts in an airtight container for freshness.
