Description

Korean Sloppy Joes are a delicious twist on the classic sloppy joe, featuring Korean flavors with gochujang and sesame.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1/2 cup green onions, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Sliced cucumbers and kimchi for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing for 2-3 minutes until the onion is translucent.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in the gochujang, soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, and rice vinegar. Mix well and let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  4. Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the chopped green onions and sesame seeds.
  5. Toast the hamburger buns lightly, then spoon the Korean sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom half of each bun. Top with sliced cucumbers and a side of kimchi, if desired. Place the top half of the bun on each sandwich.
  6. Serve immediately and enjoy the fusion of flavors!

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey for a leaner option.
  • Feel free to adjust the amount of gochujang to your spice preference.
  • Kimchi adds a great crunch and flavor to the sandwich.
