Description

A delicious and traditional Poppy Seed Roll, perfect for any dessert table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ¾ cup warm milk (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup poppy seeds
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar (for filling)
  • ¼ cup milk (for filling)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for filling)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (for filling)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients.
  4. Mix until a soft dough forms. Knead by hand or with a dough hook for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm spot for 1–1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  6. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, sugar, and butter for the filling. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the butter melts.
  7. Add the poppy seeds and cook for 3–5 minutes, stirring constantly, until thickened.
  8. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Let the filling cool to room temperature.
  9. Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle (about 12×16 inches).
  10. Spread the cooled poppy seed filling evenly over the dough.
  11. Roll the dough up tightly from the long side, like a jelly roll. Pinch the seam to seal.
  12. Place the roll seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes.
  13. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  14. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  15. Let cool on a wire rack. Optional: Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with icing once cooled.

Notes

  • Ensure that the milk is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast properly.
  • You can add nuts or dried fruits to the filling for extra flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
