Description

A flavorful Southern Cabbage dish cooked with bacon, onions, garlic, and broth, creating a delicious side that pairs well with any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium head green cabbage, cut into wedges or thick shreds
  • 3/4 cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • salt, to taste
  • black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crisp. Transfer bacon to a paper towel-lined plate, leaving the drippings in the pan.
  2. Add the diced onions to the bacon drippings and sauté for 3–5 minutes until translucent and golden. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  3. Stir in the cabbage and toss well to coat in the onion mixture. Cook for 4–5 minutes until it begins to wilt.
  4. Pour in chicken broth, apple cider vinegar, and add the butter. Stir to combine. Cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Uncover, season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir in the cooked bacon. Cook uncovered for 5 more minutes until cabbage is tender and liquid is mostly absorbed.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can use smoked bacon.
  • Red pepper flakes can be adjusted based on spice preference.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated for a quick meal.
