Description
A flavorful Southern Cabbage dish cooked with bacon, onions, garlic, and broth, creating a delicious side that pairs well with any meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 slices bacon, chopped
- 1 large yellow onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 medium head green cabbage, cut into wedges or thick shreds
- 3/4 cup chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- salt, to taste
- black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crisp. Transfer bacon to a paper towel-lined plate, leaving the drippings in the pan.
- Add the diced onions to the bacon drippings and sauté for 3–5 minutes until translucent and golden. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Stir in the cabbage and toss well to coat in the onion mixture. Cook for 4–5 minutes until it begins to wilt.
- Pour in chicken broth, apple cider vinegar, and add the butter. Stir to combine. Cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Uncover, season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir in the cooked bacon. Cook uncovered for 5 more minutes until cabbage is tender and liquid is mostly absorbed.
Notes
- For extra flavor, you can use smoked bacon.
- Red pepper flakes can be adjusted based on spice preference.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated for a quick meal.
