Description
Delicious Vanilla Custard Cream Squares made with puff pastry and rich custard.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 large egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Gently roll it out into a slightly larger square, about 1/8 inch thick.
- Cut the pastry into even squares.
- Transfer the pastry squares to the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between them.
- Prick the center of each pastry square with a fork.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and puffed, then cool on a wire rack.
- In a medium saucepan, whisk together milk, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth. Heat until thickened.
- Whisk egg yolks in a bowl; gradually whisk in the hot milk mixture to temper.
- Return mixture to the saucepan and cook for another 1-2 minutes until thickened. Stir in vanilla extract and cool.
- Whip the heavy cream in a chilled bowl until stiff peaks form.
- Assemble squares by placing a pastry square on a plate, spreading custard, adding whipped cream, and topping with another pastry square.
- Dust with powdered sugar if desired and enjoy!
Notes
- For a richer custard flavor, use full-fat milk and real vanilla extract.
- If custard seems too thick, whisk in a bit of milk.
- Ensure heavy cream is chilled for best whipping results.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- Feel free to adjust quantities and ingredients to your liking.
