Description

Delicious Vanilla Custard Cream Squares made with puff pastry and rich custard.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Gently roll it out into a slightly larger square, about 1/8 inch thick.
  3. Cut the pastry into even squares.
  4. Transfer the pastry squares to the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between them.
  5. Prick the center of each pastry square with a fork.
  6. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and puffed, then cool on a wire rack.
  7. In a medium saucepan, whisk together milk, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth. Heat until thickened.
  8. Whisk egg yolks in a bowl; gradually whisk in the hot milk mixture to temper.
  9. Return mixture to the saucepan and cook for another 1-2 minutes until thickened. Stir in vanilla extract and cool.
  10. Whip the heavy cream in a chilled bowl until stiff peaks form.
  11. Assemble squares by placing a pastry square on a plate, spreading custard, adding whipped cream, and topping with another pastry square.
  12. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and enjoy!

Notes

  • For a richer custard flavor, use full-fat milk and real vanilla extract.
  • If custard seems too thick, whisk in a bit of milk.
  • Ensure heavy cream is chilled for best whipping results.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Feel free to adjust quantities and ingredients to your liking.
