Description

Wisconsin Apple Kringle is a delicious pastry filled with apple pie filling and topped with a sweet glaze. This traditional recipe offers a perfect balance of flaky crust and sweet apple flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 3 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/3 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 2 tsp water
  • 1 egg
  • 2 oz apple pie filling
  • 1/4 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 23 tsp water (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Mix the all-purpose flour, kosher salt, and granulated sugar in a bowl.
  2. Cut in the cold, cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Activate yeast by combining warm milk, active dry yeast, and water; let it sit until frothy.
  4. Add the yeast mixture and egg to the flour mixture; stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  5. Wrap dough in plastic and refrigerate for 30-60 minutes.
  6. Roll out refrigerated dough into a rectangle.
  7. Spread apple pie filling over the dough and sprinkle ground cardamom on top.
  8. Fold edges over filling and transfer to a baking sheet; cut slits along the edges.
  9. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden.
  10. Prepare glaze by whisking powdered sugar, vanilla, and enough water to achieve desired consistency.
  11. Drizzle glaze over cooled kringle and allow to set before slicing.

Notes

  • Always use very cold butter for the best flaky texture.
  • Allow the dough to rest to prevent elasticity during rolling.
  • Chilling the dough is crucial for ease of handling and intact baking.
