- 3 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 2 tsp active dry yeast
- 1/3 cup whole milk, warmed
- 2 tsp water
- 1 egg
- 2 oz apple pie filling
- 1/4 tsp ground cardamom
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2–3 tsp water (for glaze)
Instructions
- Mix the all-purpose flour, kosher salt, and granulated sugar in a bowl.
- Cut in the cold, cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Activate yeast by combining warm milk, active dry yeast, and water; let it sit until frothy.
- Add the yeast mixture and egg to the flour mixture; stir until a shaggy dough forms.
- Wrap dough in plastic and refrigerate for 30-60 minutes.
- Roll out refrigerated dough into a rectangle.
- Spread apple pie filling over the dough and sprinkle ground cardamom on top.
- Fold edges over filling and transfer to a baking sheet; cut slits along the edges.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden.
- Prepare glaze by whisking powdered sugar, vanilla, and enough water to achieve desired consistency.
- Drizzle glaze over cooled kringle and allow to set before slicing.
Notes
- Always use very cold butter for the best flaky texture.
- Allow the dough to rest to prevent elasticity during rolling.
- Chilling the dough is crucial for ease of handling and intact baking.
