Description
Delicious, soft cinnamon rolls filled with apple butter and topped with a creamy frosting.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 envelope active dry yeast (1 tablespoon)
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs (beaten)
- 6 tablespoons butter (melted and slightly cooled)
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup apple butter
- ½ cup light brown sugar (packed)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- ¾ cup cream cheese
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- pinch salt
Instructions
- Get your ingredients ready. A stand mixer with the dough hook attachment makes it easy to knead the dough, but you can also knead it by hand.
- Activate the yeast according to package directions by mixing it in a large measuring jug with 1 tablespoon milk and 1 tablespoon sugar, then let it sit for 5 minutes until it’s bubbly.
- Once the yeast is bubbly, whisk in remaining milk, sugar, eggs, and melted butter.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and knead with the dough hook attachment on medium speed for 8-10 minutes.
- Place dough in a greased bowl. Cover and let rise at warm room temperature until doubled in size, 45 to 60 minutes.
- Punch dough down, then roll it out into a rectangle about ¼-inch thick and 18×12 inches. Spread apple butter evenly over dough, then sprinkle the sugar and cinnamon mixture on top.
- Starting on one long edge, roll up the dough jelly-roll style. Slice into 12 rounds and arrange in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan. Cover and let rise again until puffy, about 20-30 minutes.
- While rolls are resting, preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake the rolls for 18-25 minutes until golden.
- Beat all frosting ingredients together, then spread on hot rolls.
- Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- The dough should feel soft and slightly tacky but not sticky.
- If your kitchen is cool, let the dough rise in a slightly warm oven.
- Use unflavored dental floss for cutting the rolls cleanly.
- Check rolls often while baking to avoid overbaking.
