Description

Delicious, soft cinnamon rolls filled with apple butter and topped with a creamy frosting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 envelope active dry yeast (1 tablespoon)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs (beaten)
  • 6 tablespoons butter (melted and slightly cooled)
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup apple butter
  • ½ cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • ¾ cup cream cheese
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Get your ingredients ready. A stand mixer with the dough hook attachment makes it easy to knead the dough, but you can also knead it by hand.
  2. Activate the yeast according to package directions by mixing it in a large measuring jug with 1 tablespoon milk and 1 tablespoon sugar, then let it sit for 5 minutes until it’s bubbly.
  3. Once the yeast is bubbly, whisk in remaining milk, sugar, eggs, and melted butter.
  4. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and knead with the dough hook attachment on medium speed for 8-10 minutes.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl. Cover and let rise at warm room temperature until doubled in size, 45 to 60 minutes.
  6. Punch dough down, then roll it out into a rectangle about ¼-inch thick and 18×12 inches. Spread apple butter evenly over dough, then sprinkle the sugar and cinnamon mixture on top.
  7. Starting on one long edge, roll up the dough jelly-roll style. Slice into 12 rounds and arrange in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan. Cover and let rise again until puffy, about 20-30 minutes.
  8. While rolls are resting, preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake the rolls for 18-25 minutes until golden.
  9. Beat all frosting ingredients together, then spread on hot rolls.
  10. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • The dough should feel soft and slightly tacky but not sticky.
  • If your kitchen is cool, let the dough rise in a slightly warm oven.
  • Use unflavored dental floss for cutting the rolls cleanly.
  • Check rolls often while baking to avoid overbaking.
