Description
Delicious homemade crispy fries made from fresh garden banana peppers.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 large banana peppers, fresh, firm, with smooth skin
- 1 cup wheat flour
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- salt, as required
- 1 cup cold water
- 3 cups neutral oil for deep frying (canola, vegetable, or peanut)
Instructions
- First, wash the banana peppers and wipe them completely dry. Slice the peppers lengthwise from top to bottom, then carefully cut or separate them into long, thin strips resembling french fries.
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until evenly combined. Gradually pour in the cold water while whisking continuously until you have a smooth, lump-free batter with the consistency of thin pancake batter.
- Pour about 2 to 3 inches of oil into a heavy-bottomed pan or Dutch oven. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350-375°F (175-190°C). Use a kitchen thermometer for best results.
- Once the oil is hot, dip each banana pepper strip into the batter, ensuring it’s fully coated. Let any excess batter drip back into the bowl. Carefully place the battered strips into the hot oil one by one, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry in small batches.
- Fry the pepper strips for 2-4 minutes, flipping occasionally, until the batter is deep golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fries from the oil and place them on a paper towel or wire rack set over a baking sheet to drain.
- Serve immediately while hot and crispy. Pairs well with ranch dressing, spicy aioli, or Parmesan Peppercorn sauce.
Notes
- Ensure the oil is hot enough for crispy results.
- Don’t overcrowd the pan while frying.
- These fries are best enjoyed immediately for maximum crispiness.
