- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup sourdough discard
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 4 cups neutral frying oil
Instructions
- Prepare the Oil: Pour neutral frying oil into a Dutch oven or a large pot, filling it about 2 inches high. Heat the oil to medium-high heat, aiming for 350°F.
- Prep the Hot Dogs: Open the hot dog package and pat the hot dogs dry using a paper towel. Insert a stick into each one, making sure it’s secure.
- Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the yellow cornmeal, all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Combine the Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, milk, sourdough discard, melted butter, and honey until smooth.
- Combine Wet and Dry: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix gently until just incorporated.
- Dip the Hot Dogs: Pour the cornbread batter into a tall glass. Dip one hot dog at a time, allowing excess batter to drip off for about 5 seconds before placing it in the hot oil.
- Fry until Golden: Fry the corn dogs for 2-3 minutes, turning them occasionally with tongs for even frying until golden brown.
- Drain the Corn Dogs: Carefully remove the fried corn dogs from the oil and place them on a wire rack to cool.
- Serve and Enjoy: Serve your homemade corn dogs hot with your favorite condiments.
